Talk and Discussion: The Historical Roots of the Wage Gap between Men and Women in the Public Sector

April 29, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Historian Astrid Elkjær Sørensen and economist Stinne Skriver Jørgensen presents their project in which they examine how the wage hierarchy has developed for 13 selected professions in the public sector in Denmark from 1969 to 2019.  The goal is to get a better understanding on whether the wage hierarchy established with the Public Servant Reform of 1969 is still reflected in today´s public sector, and thus can be seen as a contributing factor to today’s wage gap between male- and female-dominated professions.

The conclusion is that there is indication of a static wage hierarchy, but also an indication that professions that were originally female-dominated or become female-dominated tend to retain or worsen their position in the hierarchy; which is even more pronounced when taken education into account.  This means that the Danish wage system in the public sector adapts poorly to changes in a profession’s competence profile.
