Online Workshop: The Gender pay gap in academia

October 5, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Research performed to date shows women’s wages are lower than men’s on average in the STEM fields. Through two talks, this online webinar sheds light on the findings from a recent report looking into the gender pay difference and tackles why this difference exists and what can be done about it. We will also learn how maternity leave may impact this issue and also how varying factors affect the recruitment of women into tenured positions in the economic and STEM fields.

Moderator: Andrea Asenjo Martinez from DANWISE

09.00-09.30: Professor Nabanita Datta Gupta, Aarhus University, Department of Economics and Business Economics

The Motherhood Penalty in Academia in Denmark

Short description: We study gender differences in tenure probability among PhD economists in Denmark. While our primary focus is on understanding the reasons for the absence of females at higher ranks within the economics profession, we intend to benchmark our findings to other academic areas such as selected STEM fields. Of particular interest will be to test whether maternity leave policies help or hinder female representation at higher ranks within the academic sector in economics and comparable STEM fields.

09.30-10.00: Speaker: Martin Kyed, Chief Economist and Head of Analysis, IDA, The Danish Society of Engineers

Gender differences in salaries for STEM professions – the experiences from IDA in the private sector.

Women’s wages within STEM are about 9/10 of men’s wages in the private sector. It’s at huge difference! Why is that? Central to the discussions about the  gender pay gap is the question about fairness. Even setting aside the philosophical discussions and focusing on economics, it is a field with many nuances and few clear answers. Martin Kyed will shed light on some of the explanatory factors and on the normal misconceptions about the explained and the unexplained difference in wages for women and men.
